COPY & PASTE. The Counterfeit Workshop
An exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof and the Kurt-Tucholsky-School

25.10.2012 to 25.11.2012
Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

'Copy and paste' are terms and actions that we are all familiar with through work on the computer. But copying in the analogue world is not as easy and comes with different connotations. The criticism most frequently raised against contemporary art is: "But I can do that!" As a project, COPY & PASTE puts that criticism to the test.

As part of art lessons since 2009, pupils at the Kurt-Tucholsky-Schule in Berlin-Pankow have been busy copying artworks from the collections of the Nationalgalerie in the Hamburger Bahnhof. Beyond that, this long-term project has set itself the utopian goal of having teenagers from the Kurt-Tucholsky-Schule copy the entire museum collection over time. The idea is for the school to create its own parallel collection that will be accessible to pupils on a daily basis. In the first part of the exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof, some 13 copies will go on show of works by artists featured in the Sammlung Marx, such as Keith Haring, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol. In the second part of the exhibition, held at the Kurt-Tucholsky-Schule (Berlin-Pankow), copies of other works will be on show in the pupils' daily environment: school corridors, copy rooms, classrooms and in the director's office. Material on the school's parallel collection has taken various forms in the past: in 2011 pupils from a 12th-grade class published a catalogue, with assistance from the artist Ursula Döbereiner, while a 9th-grade class produced an audio guide with help from the musician Frieder Butzmann. The exhibition itself was designed as part of a Master Class 1 by pupils in the 11th grade. A programme of accompanying events, featuring art talks, workshops and interventions, similarly drawn up by pupils, invites you to join the lively exchange of ideas on art through COPY & PASTE.

COPY & PASTE is a joint project, run between the Kurt-Tucholsky-Schule in Berlin-Pankow, the Hamburger Bahnhof and the Visitor Services of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

COPY & PASTE has been made possible thanks to funds from Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH, with support from the PwC Foundation.
