Artist talk

Thomas Struth is considered one of the most important contemporary artists and a leading representative of the Düsseldorf School of Photography. For more than five decades, he has been exploring the world in large-scale photographs organized into thematic series, ranging from cities to families and cultural sites to scientific laboratories. His artistic career began in the 1970s with painting, before he increasingly focused on photography. Struth's precise and analytical visual language reveals complex relationships between people and their environment. At the same time, Struth reflects on the medium of photography itself in his works. The starting point for the conversation will be Struth's relationship with music, which has shaped his biography and his work.

In 2004, Struth's cycle on the Pergamon Museum was presented in a solo exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart. In addition, works by him are included in the collection of the Nationalgalerie, such as the picture Louvre 1, Paris (1989) from the series of museum photographs.

Moderation: Sven Beckstette, Curator Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
