New Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Opening Hours Starting on 16 April 2024

04.03.2024

As of 16 April 2024, the opening hours of many Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues will change. Due to tight budgetary constraints, an additional closing day and shorter opening hours are taking effect. Nevertheless, individual opening hours will be extended in summer.

No changes affect the regular opening hours at the following institutions:

  • Alte Nationalgalerie
  • Gemäldegalerie
  • Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
  • Museum für Fotografie
  • Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama
  • Neue Nationalgalerie.

The long Thursday evenings until 8 pm remain in effect at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart and the Museum für Fotografie (Museum of Photography). Library operations at the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) and the study halls at the Kupferstichkabinett, Münzkabinett (Numismatic Collection) and Kunstbibliothek are also unaffected by changed opening hours. The Neues Museum and James-Simon-Galerie remain open from Tuesday to Sunday; however, now only until 6 pm on Thursdays.

Additional Closing Day and Shorter Opening Hours Starting on 16 April 2024

As of 16 April 2024, the following venues will remain closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and are reducing some of their opening hours during less frequented times of day:

  • Altes Museum
  • Bode-Museum
  • Friedrichswerdersche Kirche
  • Kunstbibliothek (Ausstellungssaal)
  • Kupferstichkabinett (Ausstellungssaal)
  • Kunstgewerbemuseum
  • Museum Europäischer Kulturen
  • Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg
  • Schloss Köpenick

School classes registered at the Altes Museum and the Bode-Museum will continue to gain access on Tuesdays.

The Altes Museum, Bode-Museum and the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche Kirche (Friedrichswerder Church) are open Wednesday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm (formerly 6 pm), and on Saturday and Sunday, as previously, from 10 am to 6 pm. These same opening hours also apply to Kunstbibliothek exhibitions at the Kulturforum.

The Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) and the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) are open from Wednesday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm (formerly 6 pm), and on Saturday and Sunday, as previously, from 11 am to 6 pm. The same opening hours apply to the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK, Museum of European Cultures).

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg in Berlin-Charlottenburg is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm.

Longer Opening Hours in Summer

From 19 April to 4 May 2024, the Alte Nationalgalerie is open from Friday to Saturday until 8 pm, and from 5 May to 3 July 2024 from 9 am to 8 pm on Thursdays to Saturdays. For an entire month, from 4 July to 4 August 2024, the museum will also be open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 8 pm. This takes into account anticipated visitor interest in the special exhibition “Caspar David Friedrich: Infinite Landscapes” (19 April – 4 August 2024).

The same opening hours, including the later opening hours from Tuesday to Saturday, also apply to the Neues Museum and the James-Simon-Galerie – but from 4 July until 1 September 2024.

Schloss Köpenick (Köpenick Palace) opens its doors to visitors during the months of April to September (also on Wednesdays), Wednesday to Friday, 11 am to 5 pm and on weekends from 11 am to 6 pm. Opening hours from October to March remain the same: the building is open Thursday to Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm.
