Hamburger Bahnhof and Neue Nationalgalerie: New Directors to Take the Reins from 1 January 2022

The Foundation Board of the Stiftung Preussischer Kultur (chaired by Minister of Culture Monika Grütters) has named new directors for the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin and the Neue Nationalgalerie, with the new recruits to take the reins from 1 January 2022. The curatorial duo of Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath will head up the Hamburger Bahnhof, and Klaus Biesenbach will become the Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts.

New Directors for the Hamburger Bahnhof: Sam Bardaouil und Till Fellrath

Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath are the founders of the multidisciplinary curatorial platform artReoriented, which they launched in 2009 in New York and Munich. They are the curators of the Lyon Biennale in 2022, and have been associate curators at Berlin’s Gropius Bau since 2017. Central to their work is inclusivity in artistic and institutional practices, and a revisionist approach to art history. They are internationally recognised curators and award-winning authors whose practice is rooted in global contemporary art, as well as in the field of modernist studies.

Klaus Biesenbach to be Made Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie

In January 2022, Klaus Biesenbach will take over as Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie and of the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts. With this move, the current Artistic Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) and a long-time Chief Curator at Large at MoMA returns to the city in which he began his career in the field of art some 30 years ago.
