Exhibition lecture series "The Black Years. Histories of a Collection. 1933–1945"

Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

21 January – 14 July 2016

Appearing in the Neue Galerie of the Hamburger Bahnhof, the exhibition "The Black Years. Histories of a Collection: 1933–1945" features works of art from the Nationalgalerie's collection that were either created, acquired, or seized during the period of National Socialist rule. Each work of art tells its own story, and these single narratives in turn make up a larger history. Narrating this history through the stories of selected artefacts, the exhibition seeks to explore art's relationship to artists, the state, life, and society.

Beginning on 21 January 2016, the exhibition will be accompanied by a series of lectures that will provide insight into current research topics such as: How do museums address 'Nazi art' today? How much room for negotiation did artists and institutions actually have between 1933 and 1945? What new knowledge has provenance research at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin provided?
