Border Explorations at Easter: A Film Documentary about Michael Schmidt in a Free Stream beginning 1 April 2021

01.04.2021
Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

The film portrait Michael Schmidt – Grenzwanderung (in German) will be made available as a free stream on Easter weekend 2021 in conjunction with the major retrospective on the Berlin photographer Michael Schmidt that was shown at the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin.

Olaf Klußmann’s 38-minute film documentary Michael Schmidt – Grenzwanderungen from 1989–2020 looks at the work of the Berlin artist during the period from 1964 to 1988. Schmidt reflects on his creative phases, offers insight into his artistic methods, and talks about role models and the influence of US photography on his work.

The film also traces Schmidt’s explorations of his “work space of Berlin,” which ceased to exist in the form he knew it shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Important figures in the art world comment on Schmidt’s art, from the early photographs in his first publications to his nationally and internationally acclaimed series of works Waffenruhe / Ceasefire.

Exhibition: Michael Schmidt – Retrospective

The special exhibition Michael Schmidt – Retrospective: Photographs, 1965 – 2014 could only be shown on a limited basis from 23 August to 1 November 2020 at Hamburger Bahnhof because of the corona pandemic and was seen by about 60,000 visitors. The exhibition was developed in cooperation with the Foundation for Photography and Media Art with the Michael Schmidt Archive.
