Byzantium and Renaissance

Byzantine art is highly marked by the late ancient culture of Greece and Rome. Known for its sacral artworks, it covered both the early Christian art based on antiquity and oriental elements.

In Latin Western Europe, the cultural achievements of Greek and Roman antiquity were forgotten for some time until the Middle Ages. They were brought back to life and developed further by Renaissance artists and scholars.

Among the around 480 moulds of these two collections there are works by artists such as Nicola Pisano, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello, the Della Robbia family and Michelangelo.
