Gipsformerei – Kunstmanufaktur seit 1819

Together with Studio Jester Blank, in October 2020 the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin released an immersive 3D model on the exhibition Near Life: The Gipsformerei – 200 Years of Casting Plaster. Now, the Studio is presenting the app Near Life. With this app, the special exhibition that was on display in the Jame-Simon-Galerie until March of 2020 can now be experienced in augmented reality (AR). The app is available for both Android and iOS devices.

3D Exhibition and AR

The app allows users to experience a visit to the museum in a highly realistic way. Users can make their way through the virtual exhibition from the comfort of their own home. The entire exhibition space can be explored in AR.

The exhibition Near Life: The Gipsformerei – 200 Years of Casting Plaster was digitised with the help of 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry technology. Through the three-dimensional imaging of the roughly 650 m2 special exhibition space in the James-Simon-Galerie, which was rendered from some 3,000 different perspective points, the more than 200 exhibits can be viewed from all sides.

3D Renderings of Individual Exhibits

Individual artworks from the exhibition Near Life were also digitised using high-resolution 4K textures. These 20 exhibits can be examined up close in high resolution, with an audio guide and object descriptions.

These high-resolution renderings of the exhibits include the shellacked plaster models of life-size sculptures from the collection of the Gipsformerei, such as the Laocoön and Princess Group, or a nearly three-metre-long crocodile, as well as groups of objects on the theme of death masks or the sensitive casts of living subjects made in colonial contexts. There are also a number of contemporary artworks that can be explored up close, by artists such as Asta Gröting, George Segal and Allan McCollum.

The artworks can also be set against individual backgrounds or in the setting of your own home. It is also possible to take a selfie with the high-resolution exhibits.
