For several decades, the Gemäldegalerie has been systematically examining its pictures by means of X-ray. This has brought about numerous highly interesting results which have become an indispensable basis both for art-historical research and restoration. X-rays reveal, for instance, alterations made by the artist while painting the composition. They can also help to "see through" later additions or manipulations of the original carried out by someone other than the artist.
This is the first exhibition dedicated exclusively to images which allow you to "look through pictures". Next to a selection of fascinating X-ray pictures which form the focus of the exhibition, the presentation also includes an introduction to other technological research methods in the field of painting. Visitors are thus allowed access to an area of museum work which usually only takes place backstage.
