In addition to the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Gemäldegalerie at the Kulturforum is again extending its opening hours for visitors on Thursday evenings. Starting on 2 September 2021, the Gemäldegalerie painting collection and the special exhibition Late Gothic: The Birth of Modernity can be viewed every Thursday until 8 pm.
The Gemäldegalerie possesses one of the world's finest collections of European art from the 13th to 18th century. After the collection was founded in 1830, it was systematically built up and perfected. The exhibition includes masterpieces by artists from every age of art history such as van Eyck, Bruegel, Dürer, Raphael, Tizian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Vermeer and Rembrandt.
Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie is holding the first ever comprehensive exhibition in the German-speaking world on late Gothic art. Featuring some 130 objects – including impressive loans and key works from the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – the show will juxtapose various artistic genres and media, revealing the full breadth of the media innovations of the 15th century and the art of the late Gothic era.
After six years of closure for renovations, the Neue Nationalgalerie will once again present major works of Classical Modernism from the Nationalgalerie collection. The Art of Society shows some 250 paintings and sculptures created between 1900 and 1945 by artists including Otto Dix, Hannah Höch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Lotte Laserstein and Renée Sintenis.
Alexander Calder (1898–1976) has been closely associated with the Neue Nationalgalerie for decades, thanks to his masterpiece Têtes et Queue (1965). The outdoor sculpture was installed for the inauguration of Mies van der Rohe’s iconic work of architecture and is now returning to the museum terrace for its reopening.
For the reopening of the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin-based artist Rosa Barba will present various works under the title In a Perpetual Now. In addition to key pieces from her oeuvre created between 2009 and 2021, a new film produced for the exhibition will also be shown.
For its reopening the Neue Nationalgalerie is devoting a special exhibition area to the history of its building and the work of its architect, Mies van der Rohe. The two major emphases are on the period of its construction (1965–1968) and its thorough refurbishment by David Chipperfield architects over the past six years (2015–2021). Selected works of art from the Nationalgalerie’s collection relating to the museum’s architecture supplement the documentary exhibit. Along with works by Josef Albers and Isa Genzken, most recent works by Michael Wesely and Veronika Kellndorfer dealing with the renovation are on display.
