Dagmar Hirschfelder, director of the Gemäldegalerie, and Sabine Lata, exhibition curator, have now welcomed the 100,000th visitor to the exhibition From Odesa to Berlin: European Painting of the 16th to 19th Century. Christiane Eifert (68) was greeted with a bouquet of flowers and an exhibition catalogue and was given a private tour of the exhibition at the Gemäldegalerie.

We are overjoyed that the exhibition has been so well received by its many visitors. The feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive: many have described the opportunity to encounter these cultural treasures from Odesa here in Berlin as an unforgettable experience. We’ve also been told on numerous occasions just how important the exhibition is from a cultural policy perspective, because it sends a powerful message of solidarity with Ukraine and support for the conservation of cultural assets.

In order to highlight the European profile of the collection from Odesa, we combined a selection of paintings with artworks from the Gemäldegalerie, Alte Nationalgalerie, and Kupferstichkabinett. There are numerous points of connection and intersection between the artworks: many of the paintings from Odesa were made by masters whose work was also collected in Berlin; others are linked to artworks from Berlin by virtue of their subject matter. These juxtapositions offer fascinating insight into the correlations between art and cultural history.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie and the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art. It is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Following the conclusion of the exhibition, the artworks from Odesa will subsequently be presented at the Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg from 19 October 2025 to 22 March 2026 (Masterpieces from Odesa: European Painting of the 16th to19th Century). From 13 August to 26 October 2025, the Kunsthalle Bremen will showcase prints from the museum in Odesa (Traces of Time: Prints from the 16th to 19th Century from the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art).
