Kulturforum

Director Frauke Schlieckau accompanies curators of the Berliner Gemäldegalerie and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam as they prepare an expansive, collaborative Frans Hals exhibition. Her film explores the role of laughter in the work of Frans Hals and how his oeuvre can offer hope in times of crisis. The film’s world premiere is on 8 July 2024 at the Sommerkino at the Kulturforum, just outside the Gemäldegalerie.

Frans Hals – Maler des Lachens (Frans Hals – Painter of Laughter) Documentary

Whether smiling in reverie, grinning mischievously or beaming from ear to ear – Frans Hals drew people who could hardly contain their joie de vivre. Next to Rembrandt and Vermeer, the artist from the Dutch city of Haarlem was a central figure of 17th-century art in the Netherlands. Unlike his contemporaries, he was devoted to depicting happiness despite the hardships that shaped his own life.
