From 19 May to 6 September 2021, the lecture series “Zwischen Mittelalter und Neuzeit – Die Kunst der Spätgotik in Deutschland” (Between the Middle Ages and Modernity – Late Gothic Art in Germany), which accompanies the special exhibition The Late Gothic Era: The Birth of Modernity at Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie, is available online as digital lectures (in German).
The Academy Lecture and Discussion Series offers a variety of opportunities for an in-depth study of subjects relating to the history of art and culture. The lectures for the special exhibition The Late Gothic Era: The Birth of Modernity provide a concise overview of the exciting “autumn of the Middle Ages”. Art historian Dr Henrik Engel leads the talks.

Contemporaneous with the Italian Renaissance and the “ars nova” in the Netherlands, 15th-century German art also achieved countless spectacular innovations. They can be found across all genres, from cathedrals to golden reliquaries and magnificent illuminated manuscripts to printed books.
