The big Anniversary Celebration at the Gemäldegalerie on 18 November 2023 has taken place with great success. The exhibition spaces and the accompanying programme including a discussion panel, film premiere, DJ, and additional offers attracted some 6500 visitors until late Saturday evening. The special event celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Gemäldegalerie at the Kulturforum location. In 1998, the collections, which had long been divided in East and West Berlin, were reunited in a new building by Hilmer & Sattler.

The Gemäldegalerie also presented its new, sustainable Beleuchtungssystem as part of the anniversary events. Following two-year renovations and partial closures, all public areas of the Gemäldegalerie have now reopened to visitors.

I am tremendously delighted by this great success! At the anniversary celebration, I spoke with many Berliners who had come to the Gemäldegalerie for the first time. I was especially pleased that many young people used the opportunity to discover the magnificent treasures in our museum. Overwhelmingly well-received were tours offered every fifteen minutes by our guides and Gemäldegalerie staff, and the programmes for families and children.

Dagmar Hirschfelder, director of the Gemäldegalerie

In the evening, following an introductory discussion panel, the ARTE/rbb documentary ‘Alte Meister, neues Licht – Die Berliner Gemäldegalerie’ celebrated its premiere with a screening in the Kulturforum lobby. The film (in German), by directors Nathan Eddy and Paul Wiederhold, looks behind the scenes in the museum and focuses on how lighting is used in painting and the gallery. It was broadcast on ARTE on 19 November and can be viewed in the Mediathek until 18 December.

The anniversary celebration was jointly organised with the Kaiser Friedrich Museumsverein and supported by ARTE and ERCO. The new lighting system at the Gemäldegalerie was made possible by Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG.
