The Backstories series tells remarkable object histories about works from the collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.his episode is about Baron von Minutoli, who made a decisive contribution to Egypt research in Germany through his work and travels. The researcher travelled to Egypt in 1822 on behalf of the Prussian king and laid the foundations for the collection for the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung im Neues Museum with the finds he made there.

The painting is based on a drawing by Minutoli and belonged to the art collection of Schloss Friedersdorf/Queis through the marriage of Minutoli's granddaughter to one of the Counts von Pfeil and Klein-Ellguth until 1945. It appeared on the Munich art market in 1987 and was acquired by the Verein zur Förderung des Ägyptischen Museums Berlin e.V. (Association for the Promotion of the Egyptian Museum Berlin). The last owner waived his rights in favour of the association.
