Every Day Special
Youth in Neukölln

08.09.2007 to 15.10.2007

An exhibition project of students at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Berlin-Neukölln, in cooperation with the Visitor Services and the Ethnological Museum of the National Museums in Berlin, as well as the Kulturamt Neukölln and the Friends of the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium.

During the last nine months, the Ethnological Museum in Dahlem and the Albert-Schweitzer-Schule Neukölln, overseen by the Visitor Services of the National Museums in Berlin, have entered museum-centred educational co-operation of a special sort.

School students (year 8) have had the chance to become familiar with the making of exhibitions "from the inside", and to develop a presentation of their own everyday life. The result is the exhibition "Every Day Special. Youth in Neukölln" which allows visitors to get a vivid close-up picture of the life of young people in the Berlin areas of Neukölln and Kreuzberg.

The exhibition gives insights into every-day school and family life, religious conventions and the leisure time culture. Thomas Bruns, a photographer living in Berlin, has portrayed the 14-to 15-year-olds. These photo portraits are supplemented by personal objects and texts surrounding the topics of childhood, youth and adulthood.
