Developments in Dahlem: Research Campus, Inspection and Restoration Workshop, Deputy Director

05.07.2019
Dahlem

The analysis of potential initiated by the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin proposed concentrating resources along a campus axis. Alexis von Poser is continuing the development of the Dahlem site as the new deputy director of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin collections at the Humboldt Forum.

On Its Way to Becoming a Dynamic Research Campus

The museum complex in Berlin-Dahlem is being converted into a research campus that will continue to develop in the coming years. The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin have been studying the location’s potential. This analysis proposes the distribution of various usage zones – exhibition areas, a library, archives, administrative spaces, restoration workshops, and storage facilities – along a “campus axis”, which is to connect the two entrance lobbies in Arnimallee and Lanstraße like a backbone. The goal is to create a dynamic location that also takes advantage of an expedient bundling of resources.

Since late 2020 the Ethnologische Museum (Ethnological Museum) and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Asian Art Museum), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, have been presenting non-European cultures at the Humboldt Forum. Management of the two museums was consolidated and Prof Dr Lars-Christian Koch appointed director in May 2018. In 2019 Dr von Poser became his deputy. The majority of the two institutions’ collections will remain in Dahlem, where they are forming the Dahlem Research Campus together with the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK, Museum of European Cultures) and the Institut für Museumsforschung (Institute for Museum Research), Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, as well as other partners.
