“The Healing Museum” project brings together mindfulness, medical research and art history and is the result of a cooperation between the Experimental and Clinical Research Centre (Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin) and the Bode-Museum (Skulpturensammlung).
Art museums are places of emotional healing. Medical studies show that visiting them reduces stress and anxiety and improves overall mental health. Looking at works of art and walking through these spaces can simply make you happy, because it increases your ability to develop mindfulness. This is the ability to pay attention to the present moment. It is a skill that can also be trained through silent or active meditation. The practice of mindfulness meditation appears to be particularly effective in reducing the negative dimensions of psychological stress and generally improves the quality of life.
We offer you the opportunity to acquire or improve practical skills in the field of mindfulness in a specially curated museum’s room devoted to the study of the intertwined meditation traditions of Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Stoicism and their influence on the new mindfulness movement of the 21st century. A selection of stimulating meditations can be accessed free of charge via our audio guide, with your mobile phone, and through this website. Bench and cushions are provided.
“The Healing Museum” joins the project “The Bode-Museum, your Refuge” (active since 2023) in our commitment to make mental health visible, support self-care, and make art history relevant to today’s society through its transversal research with other scientific disciplines.
