Bode-Museum
The Staatliche Museen has teamed up with the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Federal Cultural Foundation) to hold a joint project in museum education. On 23 June 2015 the Kulturstiftung’s board of trustees approved funding for the project amounting to up to €5.6 million. Preparations for the project have taken almost two years. Its current working title is 'Initiative to Strengthen the Museum-Education Work in Museums’. To this end, a learning lab is being set up at the Bode-Museum. It will run for four years, starting in 2016.
Michael Eissenhauer, Director-General of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin was clearly pleased with the positive decision. In a statement he announced: 'Education and cultural appreciation lie at the heart of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s mission. The joint project gives us the opportunity to put into practice new, pioneering concepts for museum education and outreach work, on top of the core programmes we already have in place. Numerous museums in Germany will benefit from getting the next generation of museum professionals involved.’
Heike Kropff, head of Education & Communication at the Staatliche Museen, had this to say: 'The development of education partnerships between museums and schools presents us with an exciting challenge that we want to explore in the “learning lab” by bringing together all actors in the equation – museum educators, curators, directors, teachers, and school directors, as well as external partners.’
In a statement, Julien Chapuis, head of the Bode-Museum said: 'The biggest challenge faced by any museum is to connect with the next generation. Through our association with the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, the Bode-Museum is now able to experiment with new ideas, take risks, and come up with models for the future. I look forward to seeing what the coming years will deliver.’
The project comprises two modules: The Learning Lab in the Bode-Museum aims to investigate the relationship between museum and school. Together with partner schools, participants will develop formats, practices, and forms of communication that will serve as prototypes, transferrable to all interested museums and other collections at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The second module of the initiative is a nationwide internship program that will make 18 internships available to young applicants in the area of museum education, outreach work, and art appreciation in art museums.
