From Fake Flora to a Gold Robbery: A Virtual Tour through the History of the Bode-Museum

13.04.2021
Bode-Museum

The special exhibition Plain Talk: About the History of the Bode-Museum, which was closed because of the pandemic, can now be explored online. The bilingual 360° tour through the exhibition in German and English documents the eventful history of the museum from 1904 to the present with audio and video material on 120 objects. It is available free of charge: www.smb.museum/plain-talk-tour.

The history of the Bode-Museum is closely linked to the history of Berlin and offers many exciting and surprising insights. I am pleased that for the time being we can now present this elaborate exhibition project virtually to our visitors. My thanks go to all colleagues involved and to the Kaiser Friedrich Museumsverein for its support. It would not have been possible to produce this unique digital content without the extraordinary commitment of Wolfgang Gülcker, a member of that association who designed and produced the tour.

Special Exhibition: Experience the Plain Talk Exhibition at the Bode-Museum and as a Virtual Tour

The special exhibition, which was completed in November 2020 and is now closed because of the pandemic, is located on the lower level of the Bode-Museum. It is divided into four sections that define the museum – The Collections, The Building, Research and The Viewing Public. They underline the multiperspectival and interdisciplinary approach of the exhibition, which also addresses current topics.

The virtual exhibition now invites visitors to take a fascinating tour of discovery through the history of the Bode-Museum. Information on all of the 120 objects, archival photographs and documents displayed is available for download in German and English by just by tapping your screen. Wall texts, information sheets and a detailed chronological overview of the museum’s history complete the presentation.

A Close Collaboration with the Kaiser Friedrich Museumsverein

The virtual tour was created through a collaboration of Wolfgang Gülcker, a member of the Kaiser Friedrich Museumsverein, with the Skulpturensammlung und das Museum für Byzantinische Kunst (Sculpture Collection and the Museum of Byzantine Art). In 2022 the Kaiser Friedrich Museumsverein will celebrate its 125th anniversary. It is pleased that its long tradition of supporting the Old Masters can be taken to a new level by facilitating the production of outstanding digital content for future generations: kaiser-friedrich-museumsverein.de.
