The Bode-Museum and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) have initiated a new interdisciplinary collaboration juxtaposing works of art from the museum with pieces of music.
The music was selected by Vladimir Jurowski, principal conductor and artistic director of the RSB, together with musicians from the orchestra. In varying ensembles, the musicians present compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Igor Stravinsky and Gesualdo de Venosa in front of visual arts masterpieces by Tilman Riemenschneider, Donatello and others. The encounter and direct dialogue between the different art forms allow them to be experienced in an entirely new manner.
Introductory talks on the selected artworks between the musicians and Julien Chapuis, director of the Skulpturensammlung und des Museums für Byzantinische Kunst (Sculpture Collection and Museum of Byzantine Art) and deputy director of the Gemäldegalerie (Old Master Paintings), precede the musical performances.

Egyptian tapestries from the Museum für Byzantinische Kunst’s rich textile collection are the source of inspiration for New York artist Gail Rothschild's new series of monumental paintings. By juxtaposing her work with original ancient textiles from the 4th‒9th centuries, a fascinating dynamic emerges between the artefacts of a past culture and contemporary artistic production.

For the very first time, the Bode-Museum itself is the focus of an exhibition. The Bode-Museum welcomes around a quarter of a million visitors every year, and its façade is one of Berlin’s most iconic images. However, the history of the building and the exhibitions it houses are often less well-known. And yet, the past and present of this building are intricately intertwined with the history of Berlin: just like Berlin, the Bode-Museum has survived the two World Wars, the Nazi era and the division of Germany, and is now confronting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exhibition ‘Beyond Compare’ introduces superlative works of art from Africa from the Ethnologisches Museum into the peerless sculpture collection of the Bode-Museum. Pairs of sculptures from both continents will be placed throughout the permanent collection and a special-exhibition gallery will address specific themes.

In Egypt, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam share a very long common history. 'ONE GOD - Abraham's Legacy on the Nile' takes a closer look at the religious life and day-to-day coexistence of the three faith communities in Egypt, from the time of the Romans all the way up to the Fatimid caliphate in the 12th century. The exhibition shows that much can be learned from archaeological finds that reflect the largely peaceful coexistence of the world religions over the course of many centuries, especially when viewed in today's political climate.
