On the occasion of the state visit of the Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) - as the first worldwide - presents a top-class loan from the Capitoline Museums in Rome: a colossal portrait head of the Roman emperor Constantine (306-337 AC). The marble head was found in 2005 in a sewage pipe under the floor level of Trajan's forum in Rome. It had probably made its way below ground during the Middle Ages, and thus remained undiscovered for centuries.
The temporary show is integrated into the permanent exhibition on the main floor of Altes Museum. The opening ceremony took place on 28 March, with the Italian state president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi present. A number of life-size marble heads, gold coins, cameos, and magnificent Roman marble sarcophagi frame the Constantine head which ranks among the famous larger-than-life bronze and marble portraits of the emperor Constantine in the Palazzo dei Conservatori in the Roman Capitol.
