The exhibition The Calvatone Victory: The Fate of a Masterpiece, organised by the State Hermitage Museum and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, opened in St. Petersburg on 7 December 2019.
The Calvatone Victory: The Fate of a Masterpiece is on view in the Roman Courtyard at the Hermitage. Marking the completion of an ancient Roman statue’s restoration, the presentation focuses on this exceptional work of art known as the Calvatone Victory. Works made of gilded bronze such as this one are extremely rare among the sculptures from this period in museums and private collections.
More than 60 works on display show various interpretations of a female deity standing on a globe, illustrating the history of this motif from antiquity to the mid-19th century, when the Calvatone Victory was discovered.
The Victory statue was exhibited at the Altes Museum from the mid-19th century to the Second World War. After the liberation of the German capital the work was taken to the Soviet Union and has been stored at the Hermitage since 1946. In Berlin the statue is considered German property displaced by the war. During the first decade of this century records were made public and unpublished archival materials discovered that documented the sculpture’s provenance and relocation. Subsequently the work was jointly studied by both Russian and German specialists.
