Alte Nationalgalerie
The Alte Nationalgalerie is one of the most comprehensive collections of art stemming from the period between the French Revolution and the First World War, ranging from Neoclassicism and Romanticism to Impressionism and the Secessions. The harmonious relationship between the museum architecture and its collection is unique. Designed under the auspices of Heinrich Strack according to plans by August Stüler, the gallery was built between 1867 and 1876. It now houses one of the most beautiful collections of art from that century of its kind, with a tour through the museum offering profound insights into the art of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The world’s largest collection of paintings by Adolph Menzel includes such important works as Das Balkonzimmer (The Balcony Room) and Das Eisenwalzwerk (The Iron Rolling Mill). The artist is revealed as an unremitting observer, who took up important subjects of Prussian history and in doing so demonstrated an astonishing imagination and a fine sense of colouring.
In addition, paintings by members of the Secession, including Sabine Lepsius, Dora Hitz, Lovis Corinth and Franz von Stuck, point the way towards Modernism.
The sculpture collection presents famous 19th-century works, such as the Princess Group by Johann Gottfried Schadow and works by Berthel Thorwaldsen, Antonio Canova, Ridolfo Schadow, Reinhold Begas, Adolf von Hildebrand and Constantin Meunier.
The collection also contains rich holdings of high-quality Impressionist painting. Masterpieces by Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Paul Cézanne and sculptures by Auguste Rodin were acquired at an early date.
Paintings from the second half of the 19th century are represented with works by Hans Thoma, Anselm Feuerbach, Arnold Böcklin, Hans von Marées, Wilhelm Leibl and Wilhelm Trübner. The Alte Nationalgalerie also presents its extensive collection of paintings by Max Liebermann.
The art of Goethe’s era is represented with landscapes by Jakob Philipp Hackert, portraits by Anton Graff and his contemporaries, and works of the German artists working in Rome, known as the Nazarenes: Peter Cornelius, Friedrich Overbeck, Wilhelm Schadow and Philipp Veit. Their frescoes illustrating the story of Joseph, commissioned for the Casa Bartholdy in Rome, constitute a significant work of art from that period.
Two rooms on the top floor of the Alte Nationalgalerie offer space for the jewels of Romanticism. Paintings by Caspar David Friedrich from all phases of his oeuvre illustrate the development of the great master of German Romantic art. Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s programmatic architectural visions are evidence of the architect’s ingeniousness as a landscape painter. Another focus is formed by the works of Carl Blechen, whose vibrant colours and unconventional motifs are ahead of their time. Also on display are portraits by Philipp Otto Runge, Gottlieb Schick and Caroline Bardua, as well as landscapes by Joseph Anton Koch and Carl Rottmann. Biedermeier art is represented with Berlin views by Eduard Gaertner and Johann Erdmann Hummel, in addition to landscapes and portraits by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and others.

Prices / Tickets
Holders of the Annual Passes BASIC and CLASSIC, the Berlin Welcome Card (All Inclusive) and the Museum Pass Berlin (3-day ticket) are required to book a time slot ticket (€6 regular / €3 reduced) in advance online. Holders of the Annual Pass CLASSIC PLUS of the Kombiticket Museumsinsel are exempt from the co-payment obligation and book a free time slot ticket in advance.
