Linda Kögel, Portrait of the Artist’s Father, ca. 1895

Oil on textile, image dimensions: 111 x 81 cm, inv. no. A II 584

Linda Kögel’s portrait of her father was not just heavily stained, it also exhibited a notably irregular surface, the cause of which could only be identified through X-radiography. The artist had used the canvas multiple times, and for the definitive version of the composition, she partially scraped off the underlying layers. After the layers were stabilised, the surface cleaned and minor retouching was carried out, the work was given a newly designed, elegant frame, and is now able to be viewed and appreciated again as the striking painting it is.
