Friederike E. A. O’Connell, Saint Magdalene, before 1850

Oil on textile, image dimensions: 100 x 81 cm, inv. no. A II 851

Both painting and frame were poorly preserved. The canvas exhibited multiple holes, there were numerous sections where the paint had flaked off, which had then been hastily affixed with a waxy paste, probably in the post-war era. The painting was cleaned, the affixed sections removed, the bare patches and holes were closed up, filled in and retouched. The missing elements of ornamentation on the original decorative frame were recast, fitted in place, and gilded.
