In addition to the heavily stained surface, this portrait of a woman with a shawl exhibited fine mildew and fly excrement across the entire painting (initial condition left). The unvarnished surface is sensitive to polar (water soluble) and non-polar solvents. This meant that the process of cleaning the surface and removing the stains was incredibly time-consuming. The results, however, entirely justify the effort.
