Since its foundation in 1973, the Verein zur Förderung des Ägyptischen Museums Berlin (Association of Friends of the Egyptian Museum Berlin) has supported the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung in numerous ways. One of its ongoing goals is to foster interest in and enable direct access to original works of art from ancient Egypt. The association has helped to organise large temporary exhibitions on special areas of interest and amassed an outstanding collection of ancient Egyptian artworks that it has given to the museum on permanent loan.
Today, the association is primarily focussed on advancing the conservation and restoration of an extensive range of artefacts currently in storage as well as furthering various research projects undertaken by the museum. It has, for example, provided part of the funding for the excavation of the rock-cut tombs of Qubbet el-Hawa North.
