A Little Cultural History of Ancient Egypt

In the film series A Little Cultural History of Ancient Egypt, the director of the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Friederike Seyfried, presents selected objects from the exhibition at the Neues Museum and provides interesting background information, helping our visitors at home to get ready for their next trip to the museum.

A Little Cultural History of Ancient Egypt: “Einwegware” (Disposable Goods)

The fourth video in our series Kleine Kulturgeschichten des Alten Ägypten (Short Cultural Histories about Ancient Egypt; in German with English subtitles) is dedicated to “Einwegware” (Disposable Goods). This segment features pottery vessels – by far the largest collection of objects to have survived from ancient Egypt. Some types of this pottery have remained ubiquitous and can still be found in large quantities throughout the country.

ERC Project ELEPHANTINE: Localizing 4000 Years of Cultural History. Texts and Scripts from Elephantine Island in Egypt

The Egyptologist and scholar of Oriental Studies Prof. Dr. Verena Lepper has received one of the most important awards in the academic world, the ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council. She has been awarded a total of 1.5 million euros to finance her research project “Localizing 4000 Years of Cultural History: Texts and Scripts from Elephantine Island in Egypt”. Thanks to this grant, a total of 10 new employees will be able to carry out research on the topic of Elephantine in the Papyrus Collection of the Ägyptisches Museum, which houses one of the biggest papyrus collections from Elephantine in the world next to the Louvre in Paris, the Brooklyn Museum in New York and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
