The exhibition "Turning the Pages - Book Illustrations from Japan" presents a selection of prints from the Golden Age of colour woodblock printing, the late 18th century, especially from the An´ei era (1772 to 1781) and the Kansei era (1789 to 1801). It offers an overview of the different book genres.
The presentation mainly includes elaborate and sumptuous colour woodblock prints of anthologies with humorous verses, as well as a number of monochrome illustrations found in travel writing, a genre which boomed during the Tokugawa period (1600 to 1868), and famous classics of court literature such as the "Tales from Ise" and the "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets". This selection is complemented by two sketchbooks and a painted pattern book for kimonos.
