The photographer Jaako Heikkilä, born in Finland in 1956, travelled the region of Pomorje, together with the journalist Helene Alm, from 1997 to 1999. The photographs presented in this exhibition were taken during their tour.
On display are portraits and impressions of people's everyday life and their homes on the Kola Peninsula: "The Pomor are not a separate people; they are stubborn Russians who turned their backs to the forest and formed an alliance with the ocean. Their home - the coasts of the White Sea and of the Kola Peninsula - is called 'Po morje' - 'by the sea', and according to their home's name they are called Pomor."(quote taken from "The Pomor" by Helene Alm and Jaakko Heikkilä).
Solo exhibitions by the artist have already been shown in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany and Great Britain. The exhibition on display in the Museum of European Cultures is organised in co-operation with the "Finnland-Institute in Deutschland".
