For more than 50 years the most beautiful books in the German language have been showcased each year after fulfilling the criteria of being 'paradigms of design, concept and production'. The independent jury, appointed by the Stiftung Buchkunst, assesses the yearly submissions according to their conceptual design, graphic design and typography, as well as to decorative elements, the quality of the paper, print and book-binding.
As an organisation, the Stiftung Buchkunst provides a critical accompaniment to the world of German book-producers. Its chief concern is the everyday book available through ordinary booksellers. The organisation's primary aim is to promote good design in everyday life and encourage graphic designers and publishers to attain the same high standards in design and workmanship, whether they are producing a children's illustrated book or a legal reference work. The exhibition 'The Most Beautiful German Books of 2010' continues the discussion on questions of design as it relates to the year just gone.
During the preview on 5 May, visitors will have the chance to hold and leaf through the shortlisted books in the study room of the Art Library. Representatives from the Stiftung Buchkunst will comment on the jury's decisions and hold presentations on individual publications. The winner of the Stiftung Buchkunst Prize was selected by a special jury in December 2010. The winner will be officially presented with the award at the Frankfurt Book Fair later this year. First prize went to the book by Oswald Egger, 'Die ganze Zeit' published by Suhrkamp Verlag, Berlin.
