For more than half a century, the most beautiful books of each year have been singled out for praise after meeting the judges' criteria of being 'models of design, conception and production'.
While last year's KIOSK exhibition primarily focussed on outstanding books and magazines mainly from the realm of art and design produced by independent publishers, the focus this time round is on popular consumer books.
The overall aim of the competition, organized by the Stiftung Buchkunst, is to promote good design in the everyday as well as to offer both graphic designers and publishers encouragement to apply the same high standards in layout, design and production to all forms of publications. The extent to which today's standards in print design are largely the result of successive achievements made in the past is something that the exhibition planned for autumn, entitled 'Welt aus Schrift', aims to illustrate. The show will present examples of the creative use of print and typography in the 20th century.
This year of exhibitions will be dedicated to the alphabetic writing system and chart the many changes it has undergone and its relation to the image. At the preview of the current exhibition on 6 May, visitors will have the opportunity to hold and leaf through the shortlisted books and study them up close. Representatives from the Stiftung Buchkunst, a major foundation for book art, will provide a commentary to the final decisions made by the independent jury and present individual books in greater detail.
In cooperation with the Stiftung Buchkunst.
