Not only was Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) a poet, composer and philosopher, he was also an important painter and ranks as one the pioneers of Indian modernism whose works were widely exhibited in the West in his own lifetime. The year 2011 is the 150th anniversary of Tagore's birth. To mark the occasion, the Indian government has helped devise a comprehensive curatorial plan that will see scores of his paintings go on display at various institutions around the world. Now, in a joint project between the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Rabindra Bhavana and the Kala Bhavana Museum at Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan, a selection of 208 of his artworks will go on show from September of this year, in various cities outside India - with a total of 98 of these works appearing in Berlin.
Tagore's pictures have lost nothing of their characteristic Bengali sensibility for form and colour and provide an insight into the link between Indian modernism and European expressionism.
In conjunction with the Indian embassy, the Museum of Asian Art is organizing a programme of events to accompany the exhibition, featuring talks, readings, theatre performances, films and guided tours.
