The Friedrich Christian Flick Collection im Hamburger Bahnhof

22.09.2004 to 07.08.2005

Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart
Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

Central to the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection's first exhibition in the Hamburger Bahnhof is the display of an unique series of work by one of the most significant contemporary artists: Bruce Nauman. The exhibition is set up to reflect the essence of this American artist's thought, while also reflecting on different chapters of contemporary art and the issues it confronts. In some rooms the arrangement of works by Jason Rhoades, Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham, Paul McCarthy, Franz West, Pippilotti Rist and Diana Thater has been done by the artists' themselves.

The exhibition, focusing on different artistic approaches and facets of artistic work, also accounts for an artistic discourse about museums as institutions, thereby following issues not only raised by Marcel Duchamp, father of conceptual art but also by Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers. Important issues around contemporary art being the result of a process will be exemplified through works by Nam June Paik, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Roman Signer and Dieter Roth. Different perspectives on the subject "space and architecture" will be considered through works by Jeff Wall, Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark and Rachel Khedoori. The Body and its sexuality is presented by work series of Raymond Pettibon, Paul McCarthy and Cindy Sherman, adding another interesting feature to this exciting exhibition.
