As part of Berlin Fashion Week, the Berliner Salon is presenting a week-long group show of young designers in the exhibition spaces at the Museum für Fotografie.

The designs were selected by Christiane Arp, chair of the Fashion Council Germany and co-initiator of the Berliner Salon, and Marcus Kurz, managing director of Nowadays and co-initiator of the Berliner Salon. In collaboration with Britta Bommert, head of the Fashion Image Collection at the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library), and Matthias Harder, director of the Helmut Newton Foundation, they have been assembled into a curated overview with exhibits currently on display at the museum. The Berliner Salon offers young designers from Germany opportunities to present their collections to an international audience.

The presentation is conceived as a dialogue with two current special exhibitions at the Museum für Fotografie. Polaroids, on display in the Helmut Newton Foundation spaces, provides a view into the sketchbook of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. Helmut Newton used this instant photography medium as both a preliminary study and to check lighting and image composition. Hundreds of such original Polaroids are found in the Foundation’s Berlin archive; a representative selection of them has been chosen and enhanced with Polaroid enlargements. Rico Puhlmann. Fashion Photography, 50s–90s, in the Kaisersaal at the Museum für Fotografie, offers extensive insights into Rico Puhlmann’s draftsmanship and photographic oeuvre, which he created over a 40-year career, working first as an illustrator and then as a fashion photographer for many influential magazines. The most popular and sought-after photo models of the time posed for his camera.

An exciting exchange arises in this dialogue between the new fashion designs and fashion photographers Rico Puhlmann and Helmut Newton. Design and photography both revolve around focuses such as representation, self-portrayal, body image and societal depiction. The Berliner Salon group exhibition at the Museum für Fotografie showcases the close relationship between the artistic media of photography and fashion.

The exhibition is supported by Museum & Location.
