Suzani are large embroidered textiles used as hangings and drapes to adorn the living rooms of the urban and rural population of Central Asia.

The oldest surviving suzani originate from the 18th century. In their carpet-like decoration, a rich, predominately vegetable system of patterns evolves that is inspired by local traditions and the Islamic art of the court of Iran and Mughal India especially. A special group in the exhibition is made up of 'large medallion suzani', with their particularly archaic patterns which fill up most if not all of the surface.
