The exhibition Sascha Wiederhold brings together the few surviving works by an artist who had previously fallen into undeserved obscurity. This will be the first time his pieces have been exhibited in almost half a century.
The work of Sascha Wiederhold (1904–1962) is a rediscovery. The artist began painting in 1924 and belonged to the circle around Herwarth Walden’s Berlin gallery “Der Sturm”. Wiederhold also designed stage sets, posters and book covers. The imagery he constructs in his artwork consists of wildly swirling shapes and patterns as well as intense colours, and his large-format paintings convey an almost psychedelic visual experience. During the Nazi era, Wiederhold ceased his artistic activities and began working as a bookseller.
Only a few works have survived. Wiederhold’s 1928 painting Bogenschützen (Archers), recently acquired by the Nationalgalerie, has already been well received in the current collection exhibition The Art of Society 1900–1945.
The exhibition is curated by Dieter Scholz.
This exhibition was made possible by the Freunde der Nationalgalerie.
A special exhibition by the Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
