The exhibition in the miniatures cabinet shows facets of Islamic religious life. Sumptuous Korans, prayer books, and pilgrims' guide books from the 16th and 17th centuries represent the Muslim's main duties. Among the 20 album sheets from 17th century Mughal India is the famous picture of the emperor Jahangir and the crown prince Khurram congregating with members of their court at the mosque of Ajmer for the first Eid prayer marking the end of Ramadan. Other illuminations and miniatures show images of the Sufi movement with its mystics, ascetics, and saints, Hindus among them. The wise men were visited by monarchs as much as simple folks, especially women, hoping for advice and comfort.
