Richness in Diversity

31.08.2013 to 29.09.2013
Museum Europäischer Kulturen

This year's motto for the Slovakian Culture Days, which run from 31.08.2013 to 29.09.2013 at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen, is: 'Richness in Diversity'. The series of events is devoted to the people, culture, and history of Slovakia. The extensive programme includes lectures, film screenings, music and dance performances, and readings. The eleven dates give visitors the opportunity to encounter the country's historical and vibrant cultural diversity. The museum is also playing host to two small touring exhibitions from the capital Bratislava. The displays reveal how traditions in music and handcrafts form part of the country's intangible cultural heritage and how these traditions are absorbed in modern design and music from that country.

The exhibition content and many of the exhibits themselves stem from the Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Slovak Folk Art Ensemble (SLUK) and the Slovak Centre for Folk Art Production (ULUV). The latter regularly hosts competitions that encourage young designers to both take up and investigate traditional forms of material culture and fashion new ones of their own. The results of these competitions, supplemented in the Berlin display by several historical objects from the collections of the Museum Europäischer Kulturen and the Ethnologisches Museum, demonstrate both the great craftsmanship that went into their making and the vitality of creative culture.

The collaboration partners involved in the project are the Slovak Institute and the embassy of the Slovak Republic in Berlin. They are supported by the Department of Ethnomusicology at the Ethnologisches Museum, the Deutsches Kulturforum östliches Europa, and the Verein der Freunde des Museums Europäischer Kulturen.
