Between 1842 and 1845, a grand Royal Prussian expedition to Egypt took place, sent on its way by Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The material with which the Prussians returned - landscape pictures, archaeological drawings and plans, epigraphic paper copies, sketches and diaries - are now in the possession of the Academy of Sciences Berlin Brandenburg (Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften). The material brought back from the Prussian expedition sheds new light on the political relations and situation of Egypt before colonial powers gained access to it at the end of the 19th century, as well as on the emergence of ways of understanding the "Orient" and pharao culture in Europe.
