Museum Europäischer Kulturen

On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Polish November Uprising, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (Museum of European Cultures) marks the German-Polish Year 2005/2006 with two exhibitions. The exhibitions highlight events which are increasingly disappearing from Polish, as well as German, awareness. After the failure of the uprising in 1830, thousands of emigrating freedom fighters were received with great willingness, helpfulness and friendliness in German cities and parishes. In return, their presence reinforced liberal-democratic tendencies and endeavours towards unification within the German states. It was a time of cultural and political dialogue, a highpoint in the history of Polish-German relations.

Accompanying the exhibition in the Bruno-Paul-Building, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen presents a second show in the cabinet rooms of the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery). This illuminates the outstanding biography of the Polish freedom fighter Ludwik Mieroslawski, a prototype-European who left footprints in the history books of Poland, Germany, France and Italy.
