An exhibition of the National Museums in Berlin, National Gallery, Museum Berggruen, with the support of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux and the Musée Picasso, Paris.
The Museum Berggruen is celebrating its tenth birthday with an exhibition of Pablo Picasso's drawings. Since the opening of the museum in 1996, this artist - who has shaped the visual concepts of the 20th century like no other - is the central focus of the presentation "Picasso and his Time" which 1.5 million visitors have already seen.
After successful exhibitions on Klee (1998), Cézanne (2000) and Matisse (2003), the Museum Berggruen now presents Picasso as a draftsman. 140 masterpieces on paper from the collection of the Musée Picasso in Paris are making a guest appearance in Charlottenburg. In exchange, the Picasso treasures from Heinz Berggruen's collection are on show in Paris. With these exhibitions, Heinz Berggruen's two home countries Germany and France each pays a tribute to the 92-year-old collector.
The Picasso exhibition at the Musée Picasso in Paris, which for the largest part consists of works from the Museum Berggruen in Berlin, will be on show in Paris from 20 September 2006 to 8 January 2007.
The two exhibitions - "Picasso the Draftsman" in Berlin and "Berggruen the Collector" in Paris - are accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue each, published at Nicolai Verlag and Flammarion respectively.
While the 2005 show "Pablo. The private Picasso" in the New National Gallery focused mainly on paintings and sculptures, here the attention is turned towards the most intimate genre of art: the drawing. The drawing is the most immediate expression of that which moves the artist. Throughout his many artistic phases, drawing remained Picasso's favourite field of experimentation for the conception and preparation of pictorial ideas.
