The various clichéd perceptions of 'the orient' in the fin de siécle have complex causes and effects: on the one hand the Middle East is a source of inspiration for new artistic forms which take Islamic art as their historical model and on the other, it stimulated the minds of westerners to dream up visions of the future that even in the conservative occidental world would have been quite unthinkable.
The pictures taken from a German private collection give a full sense of the history of how the art of 'the orient' was received in this museum in an exciting interplay with original pieces.
