Newton. Horvat. Brodziak

Starting on 4 June 2015, the Helmut Newton Foundation will present the three-part exhibition 'Newton. Horvat. Brodziak'. In previous years, 2006 and 2007, the display of Helmut Newton's work was augmented by that of famous colleagues, each time in a show featuring a combination of three photographers. The format for such displays derives from Newton himself: when he established the foundation that bears his name, it was his explicit wish that his work be shown in combination with that of others. And in selecting Frank Horvat and Szymon Brodziak, the curators have chosen two photographers whose work also oscillates between fashion and portrait photography.

Horvat (b. 1928) is Newton's junior by eight years and, like Newton, spent decades working for the most prestigious magazines. He has created an equally remarkable, autonomous body of work containing numerous iconic images. In this exhibition he is represented by nearly 200 small-format images from different genres spanning more than six decades, which all stem from his long-running project 'House with 15 Keys'.

The young Polish photographer Szymon Brodziak (b. 1979), recent winner of the accolade 'World's Best B&W Campaign Photographer' in Cannes, presents a selection of some 30 large black-and-white images, mostly of women, taken for magazines, calendars, and other advertising campaigns, in what is his first-ever museum showing in Germany. The two monographic displays are complemented with the second part of Helmut Newton's permanent loan, which has been preserved at the Museum für Fotografie since the founding of the Helmut Newton Foundation. The new presentation includes many of Newton's iconic images, among them fashion and nude photography, portraits and self-portraits, more than 70 original or 'vintage' prints in all, many of which are going on display in the Museum for the first time.
