Maria Sibylla Merian and the Tradition of Flower Illustration

In commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the death of the great Maria Sibylla Merian, the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt will be exhibiting outstanding pieces from their collections of her German natural-historical depictions of flowers and insects. The Exhibition traces the history of flower painting and drawing in all its manifold and delicate forms of approach and expression, taking in other pictorial themes of natural history in printmaking and illustration along the way. On show will be around 150 works on paper and vellum dating from 16th to the late 18th century from the collections of both museums. This core selection will be supplemented by specially chosen pieces on loan from other collections.
