The photographs taken by Lukas Werth in Pakistan have a unique aura. The scenarios have been chosen by the people portrayed, and the choice of locations in historic and modern city centres as well as religious and private rooms speak of the great sensitivity with which the photographer approaches his subjects. Distinguished by an impressive acridity, the images portray buildings - their facades and characteristic ornamentation - as indicators of a foreign living environment. The people portrayed are aware of the subtle presence of the photographer, he seems to be part of their activities or contemplations. A special technique of photographic exposure and printing makes the pictures appear like intaglio prints; the black and white of the original images has taken on a warm tonality which seems to emulate the Asian light.
