Landscapes and People of Japan

26.01.2016 to 16.05.2016
Museum für Asiatische Kunst

Mount Fuji, not to mention a number of other famous landscape settings, have for centuries served as subjects for painting in Japan. Alongside an imposing view of Fuji (from a private collection), this rotating exhibition displays another folding screen, here depicting places of interest in and around Kyoto, including the coastal landscape with pine-covered sandbanks known as the “Bridge to Heaven” (Japanese: “Ama no hashidate”), which lie just off-shore and are considered to be among the most beautiful pieces of scenery in Japan. To round off the collection, there are pictures in which figures can be seen minting coins, or just taking a leisurely stroll, and literary scenes populated with people in contrasting landscapes – some wintry and snow-filled, others bursting with springtime cherry blossom.
