Permanent Exhibition
Gemäldegalerie
In the 'Kinder-Reich' at the Gemäldegalerie, children can find out for themselves how Dutch 17th-century paintings were created. In a diverse range of activities and learning approaches, they discover many facts on the processes and work steps involved in the painters' workshops, the training painters received and the materials and techniques used at the time.
The reconstruction allows children to get a real, hands-on feel of what a workshop was like, while numerous utensils, tools and raw materials give a clear visual insight into the painting process in the leaning buffet. Finally, a ten-part Q&A game informs children on the running of a painter's workshop, as demonstrated in a large work by the artist Johannes Stradanus.
Families can go on a journey of discovery here before or after viewing the actual masterpieces in the Gemäldegalerie itself. They can learn things together, find out more about the techniques and materials used by the artists.
School groups can visit Kinder-Reich with the Gemäldegalerie's own art appreciation teachers. The wealth of visual aids just a few paces away from our unique collection of old masters gives a whole new twist to the art appreciation class.
The new place of learning has been made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Kaiser Friedrich-Museums-Verein, the traditional society of friends for the Gemäldegalerie and Sculpture Collection.
Note:
A range of one-hour events are on offer, suitable for children attending primary school, which combine a visit to Kinder-Reich and the permanent collection.
Kinder-Reich is only designed to assist in art appreciation. Practical work is possible in three-hour events held in our educational workshop, Studio MP.
