This exhibition of 590 photographs, presented by the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, sketches a broad panorama of the life of people in China. At the same time, it represents a valid survey of Chinese documentary photography of the last five decades of the 20th century. Divided into four categories - existence, relations, desire, time - the densely hung pictures portray everyday Chinese life against the background of social revolutions. Going beyond the shiny, all-too-obvious surface of economic success in China's major cities, the photographers have set out to document, above all, the effects of increasingly speedy modernisation on the individual.

The Museum for Photography takes over this multi-faceted exhibition without changes or commentary. In this way, this "Chinese self-portrait", in which the country in effect takes a look at itself, can be a first step towards understanding more of the culture of this "unknown far-away land".
